Albert Park
The Architect’s own family home:
After 17 years of designing homes and apartments for others, this was my first opportunity to create a home for my own family—somewhere deeply personal, a reflection of our values, and a place we truly love. While I had previously designed a home for my parents and a garden for my in-laws, this was the first time I could shape a space entirely for us.
I believe that architecture is an act of love, hope, and protection, and I strive to express that in every project. My fundamental philosophy is to design buildings that are as kind as possible to the planet while providing a safe, healthy, and comfortable environment for those who inhabit them. Within the constraints of planning and heritage, this home embodies the principles I hold most dearly—built for the people I love most.
The Sea
I have always felt drawn to the sea—its blue space, its rhythm, its sense of vast possibility. That connection influenced our choice of location. We wanted to live within easy reach of the city by bike or tram, so we willingly sacrificed space for a place that keeps us close to both the water and urban life. Like generations of neighbors before us who arrived “fresh off the boat,” our home just inland from the beach feels like an anchor, linking us back to our childhood homes across the world.
The Design
This home is designed as a ship for our family’s journey through life.
Like the great sailing vessels of the past, it features an exposed structural frame of glue-laminated posts and beams, sourced sustainably. Maritime influences—from harbors and luxury steam liners—are reflected in its curves, timber bulkheads, decks, portholes, and jointed, riveted cladding.
Passive House
As an energy-positive Passive House Plus, this home serves as an ark—a place of resilience against the changing climate.
- All-electric with rooftop solar generation
- Exceptionally low energy use
- Airy, quiet, draught-free, and comfortable year-round
- Cool in summer, warm in winter
Engineered Timber
Timber was the only choice for me—it’s not just a material, but the essence of the structure itself.
Rather than being a decorative feature, the hardwood timber structure is fully expressed and integral—all walls, floors, and roofs are fixed onto the exposed posts and beams. These were prefabricated by TGA Engineers and assembled on-site with precision.
We were fortunate to work with David Brewer of Feature Properties VIC, a skilled builder who not only believed in our vision but also shared our love for the sea and fine craftsmanship. We are deeply grateful to him and the talented tradespeople who brought this home to life.
