Kyneton
The Design Brief:
Gavin and Deb asked us to design them a beautiful new home for their tree-change from their home in Newport, to this new site near Kyneton, VIC.
It had to be a Passive House Plus (Carbon Positive) that was capable of going off-grid and future proofed to allow for changing needs and ageing in place. It had to be flexible enough to allow for adult children and guests to stay in a dedicated zone.
The form and materials needed to be robust, fire resistant and aesthetically appropriate for the rural context. This gave rise to a simple gable ended design with eaves and corrugated gladding reminiscent of the shearing sheds from one of the owner’s childhood farmstead.
Harmonious connections with the land:
The home was oriented North for optimum solar gain and views to the manna gum tree, the dam and to the hills beyond.
The project had to sit lightly on the site to maintain drainage patterns that captured all run-off into a dam that could be used for cultivation.
It had to have ready access the main living and bedroom spaces to sheltered outdoor decks and covered verandahs down to the landscape.
Creating Shelter:
The site is exposed to harsh northerly winds so we designed the living space to open in two directions. They can use North Facing Decks and sit under a pergola, or they can sit on the southern courtyard that is sheltered between the house and the matching barn.
Establishing roots:
Gavin and Deb have cleared the site of weed species such as gorse and hawthorn and are rehabilitating the vegetation by planting many native trees, shrubs and fruit trees.
They moved in in July 2024 and are enjoying their beautiful comfortable and energy efficient new Passive House Plus.
